Roux-En-Y Gastric Bypass - Gastric bypass, the most common weight loss procedure in the US, is achieved by creating a small stomach pouch which empties directly into the lower part of the intestine. The operation first divides the stomach into one smaller and one larger pouch. The smaller pouch is then stapled directly into the lower intestine, thus bypassing calorie absorption. The remainder of the stomach is not removed, but is stapled and divided from the newly created smaller pouch.

The Lap Band - A new technique with the purpose of restricting the amount of food to be consumed at a meal. The procedure is achieved by placing a band, a belt type mechanism, around the upper stomach to create a smaller stomach pouch. The idea behind the lap band is to modify the size of the stomach allowing for a feeling of fullness after a small meal. The advantage behind the lap band is the ability to inflate or deflate the band according to the weight loss history and needs of the patient. The Lap Band procedure is minimally invasive as well as removable and adjustable. No division of the stomach occurs in the procedure
